X Dixon 1947 Journal 62. June 23. Yellowstone River, 1 mi NE Glendive, Dawson Co, Montana. 1/4 mile and took left fork; now going singly. Birds noted along stream were Spotted Towhee, Goldfinch, Chat, Red-eyed Vireo, Yellow Warbler, Field Sparrow. Meadowlarks only birds noted in grassy fields. Farther upstream noted Lark Sparrows abundantly in Artemesia or in box eiders along the stream edge - these birds were on grassy slopes at the stream border and on up or down slopes - probably foraging closer to stream. Mourning Doves common in this area. Crows heard farther to west. Flushed a large bird probably 2 Sharp-tailed Grouse from shrubby at edge of grass-streamside growth. Three chicks the size of Bobwhite with adult - all scattered in bush on opposite side of stream and I was unable to locate them again. Cowbird singing from tree top. I collected adult Lark Sparrow (2052,?) with grasshopper nymph in beak. Several young magpies in tree along stream called raucously, yellowthroats & Yellow Warblers singing along stream. Flushed Brown Thrasher in Shepherdia along stream. I proceeded uplope onto grassy area - short grasses, scattered low Opuntia of pancake variety and a few Artemesia makes low & stubby.
