Jonco hyemalis
Jan 24. NE face San Pablo Ridge, Contra Costa Co., Calif. I noted one individual in a mixed flock of passerines (White-c. & Golden-c. Sparrows, Oregon Junco, Green-backed Goldfinch (4) and House Finch(2), total 50 - 60 birds which flew from grass to nearly edge of Baccharis chaparral. This slate colored junco was less restless than the Oregon junco or appeared so, remaining in one shrub; answering my squeak by appearing in plain view, and finally flying to rejoin the flock when it alone remained in that brush.
