K Dixon 1950 Pipilo fuscus 4. May 9. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda Co., Calif. 9:40 AM - towhee in brush on W-facing slope of 1st draw W Lab at lower edge of brush (southernmost). At 10:50 towhee foraging silently further S where curve slopes around to SE. 5 minutes later towhee calling chip from edge of road on W side of draw then flew across road toward pool. I suspect 2 pairs here. May 10. 8:00 Brown Towhee at edge of Botanic Garden E of S Gate - bird from 2nd tributary? 8:30 - pair reinforcement calls peak of ridge W of Lab. 10:45 towhee on slope E of water tank 10:50 pair in oak canal of upper part of draw N of lab. Along road between 2 tributaries - 2 Robins & one towhee foraging together - Robin darted at towhee which took to shrubbery nearby. Robin moved on at my approach, towhee later calling chip. On ridge between tributaries inside garden - towhee repeatedly chased S Song Sparrow which sang later. Towhee silent. Same chase at 2:15 PM - one Pipilo in oak W of grassy part of ridge - other calling from W slope in clear patch with dead Conium stalks etc. This pair not the same ones seen along road 100 feet to S 9 feet. May 11. 7:40 PM - towhee calling along creek E of mouth of 1st tributary from Botanic Garden and another up road W garden. One on E bank of 2nd tributary but now up road leading past Old Forest Station.
