K Dixon 1950 Pipilo fuscus 2. Apr. 7 314 Alcatraz Ave. Oakland, Alameda Co., Calif. Rainy morning Cought a Brown Towhee on kitchen window sill trap at 5:00 PM. Two other Brown Towhees were together in live oak and later on fence. One banded red above aluminum, the other unbanded. Birds according to Martha were quite agitated with feathers ruffled; she said the red-banded bird was giving calls chip chip chi ---- (recorded on page 1) and also "pain - reinforcement" calls ("skyyr skyyr skyyr"). She was not sure that both birds gave this call. Calling continued for some time as we had difficulties with colorband - eventually we banded the towhee in trap yellow over aluminum (48-223171) on right leg. Apr. 20. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda Co., Calif. 6:40 PM (our setting) Pair of Towhees along second tributary leading into Botanic Garden. 2 of Black-headed Grosbeaks in pursuit in oak tree; towhee in same tree gave rapid pip ---- call while mate foraged on ground - elicited by grosbeak action ?? Apr. 23. 314 Alcatraz Ave, Oakland Alameda Co, Calif. 6:45 PM, a few minutes after sunset. Brown Towhee (0?) banded red over aluminum on right leg which had been seen 2-3 minutes earlier in large shrub north of our house, flew up from it to perch atop a chimney on house N of that shrub. This bird assumed an unusual pose with tail held nearly vertical and head slightly above horizontal, wings drooping somewhat and vibrating slightly. A series of single notes were audible at a distance of about 100 feet (not known whether from this bird or another hidden bird)
