Dixon, K. 1950
Jan 28. Oakland, Alameda Co., Calif. [314 Alcatraz Ave.]
Martha trapped a Towhee at feeding station on platform
built or our kitchen window about 3:00 PM. I banded it
48-223173?
on her later red above aluminum on right leg.
Feb 9. NE slope San Pablo Ridge, Contra Costa Co., Calif. For past several
weeks I have seen & heard a pair of Brown Towhees near 2nd
side draw of Gulch II (above cattle trough, see journal p. 4). Today
at 12:45 I saw a towhee on ridge between Gulches II and III
below cow path. I am not certain this isn't the one from Gulch II.
I know of no other Brown Towhees in area of concentration I
avail study to date.
Mar 26. Oakland, Alameda Co., Calif. [314 Alcatraz Ave]
Overcast after rain of last night. A towhee entered
Trap about 6:10 AM. I banded it while about aluminum
48-223172 on right leg. The bird appeared to be alone,
flying to roof of shed in yard N of house and thence toward
E. It was not met by a mate so far as we could see.
Mar 28. Brown Towhee in trap at 6:20 AM slipped out of my grasp as
I was removing it from the trap. Of four instances of trapping
this species here, twice individuals have escaped, perhaps
four individuals involved.
Mar 29. Univ Calif. Campus, Berkeley, Alameda Co., Calif. At 7:00
I saw Brown Towhee chase Song Sparrow & later Spotted
Towhee away from broad ledge below windows on west side
of office, 2593 LSB. Towhees appear to monopolize the
feeding tray & surrounding area.
Mar 30. Oakland, Alameda Co., Calif. Martha & I watched
Brown Towhee preening in oak tree for 2-3 minutes.
She had binoculars and reported that 2 feathers
dropped from bird's plumage separately.
Apr 5. 9:45 AM Cloudy, sun dim. Bird banded red over aluminum
on stone-paved yard next door hopping about on ground
giving call chip chip chi chi -- --- --- --- chi,
two introductory chips followed by a series of about 12
notes with tempo increasing then decreasing at end.
