K Dixon 1950 Carpodacus purpureus 1. Mch 20. Oakland, Alameda Co., Calif. Partly overcast. Heard a Purple Finch singing in back yard (residential area with scattered fruit trees & shrubs) at 6:30 AM. This is the first occurrence of this species I have noted this winter and spring although House Finches pass through occasionally. This must have been a wandering ♂ since Purple Finches have been singing for a month & I have never heard one in this neighborhood previously. Mch 26. I have heard Purple Fincher (at least ♂ singing ♂) in the same area during the last few mornings. Mch 31. Saw a purple Finch (? coloration) in English Holly in yard; bird identified by call note "pit" given singly at irregular intervals, perhaps more frequently if bird was mildly alarmed or uneasy. Accompanying the finch was an English Sparrow of undetermined sex (light poor due to complete overcast; 5:45 PM). when the finch flew, it was followed closely by the sparrow. Apr 1. 7:00 AM; overcast; calm. Heard Purple Finch song in backyard and saw ?-plumaged individual foraging on oak foliage and definitely saw this bird sing. In the same tree was an English Sparrow which appeared to be ♂ Apr 2. ±5 mi E Colfax, , Alameda Co., Calif. Area of yellow pine - Incense Cedar about a mile W of grove of Pinus attenuata on U.S./Hwy 40. About 1:30 PM heard typical rolling song of purple finch; also call note churred by. Warm, sunny day.
