K Dixon 1450 Pheucticus melanocephalus Apr. 20 Strawberry Canyon, Univ. Calif. Campus, Alameda Co., Calif. Clear, sunny. Took 1st walk into canyon this week 5:30-7:00 PM. Found no grosbeaks until I reached area south of Botanic Garden. At junction of 2nd tributary flowing thru garden into creek three ♂ grosbeaks were exchanging song at 6:30. In one case one ♂ was chasing another in an oak overhanging the road while a third sang downstream. Song sounded more rapid than that of Robin with less range in pitch of introductory phrases. No females in evidence. May 4. Singing ♂ at SW corner of Botanic Garden (3:15) and oaks S of creek + NW of old Forest Station Bldgs. (3:30 PM). At 4:05, ♂ singing in alders SE of Farmhouse and another ♂ perched on telephone wire on N side of road there. May 5. ♂ singing in oaks W of pool at 8:40. ♂ singing along 1st tributary S of Botanic Garden fence 8:45, 9:45. ♂ singing on S bank of creek E of tributary from 9:00-9:45. Nest in oak overhanging road on E side of 2nd tributary (outside garden fence) "Sric" calls heard; no bird seen. May 6. ♂ left nest as I passed underneath at 9:30 AM ♂ singing in alders SE Farmhouse + another used road S at 9:50
