K Dixon 1950 Vireo gilvus May 7. Strawberry Canyon, Harvard Co., Calif. Sunny; light W breeze. Nest #1 (discovered May 6 by Harrison Ryder) in alder S of Poultry Research Lab - ± 20 feet above ground. Bird singing on nest at 10:05 AM (facing NW) and singing at 12:20 (facing S, tail only visible) Nest #2 (found by Martha Dixon today) Nest in laurel on 2nd tributary flowing into creek from Botanic Garden. Bird apparently singing from nest (which was not completely visible) at 10:45 and again an hour later as we walked by. Nest about 20 feet above ground on S side of an upright branch. At Nest #1, 7:25 PM - bird on nest not singing although other vireos within earshot were. Bird faced N. May 8. 10:08. Bird on nest, facing S; ?(?) sang from alder to E. (silent) (Nest #1) May 10 8:40 AM - Vireo on nest facing N, silent. Song from whistream about where titmouse nest located. May 18. During the morning I noted that the nest was hanging away & appeared to be partly shredded - evidently some predator had located nest. July 28. At 11:40 vireo sang in laurels along 2nd tributary S of Botanic Garden fence, the only song I heard all a.m. long. Several young individuals noted; one group ~ parent & 2 juv both begging in willow along creek.
