K Dixon 1950 Hylocichla ustulata Aug 23. Wildcat Cr., Contra Costa Co, Calif. - clear calm evening. Between 7:20 to 8:40 pm (speak in shadow) I heard 2 or perhaps 3 thrushes along a 200 yard long willow strip between picnic area & Jewel lake. Aug. 28. Univ. Calif. Campus, Berkeley, Alameda Co., Calif. A cool day, fog having cleared by 9:00 am. At 10:15 and again an hour later I heard several whistled "whit" notes, unmistakably calls of this thrush, from Acaculus outside my window on the N side of MV2. Sept. 1. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda Co., Calif. Warm day. From 12:30 - 12:50 I heard at least 2 Russet-backs calling from along creek upstream from mouth of 1st tributary (south of Botanic Garden) Sept 13. Univ Calif Campus, Berkeley, Alameda Co., Calif. Cool morning - high fog overcast. About 9:45 I heard call note & later saw thrush in blackberry about 50 ft SE of West gate entrance - bird repeated call several times. A few minutes later, saw 2 thrushes along creek SW of eucalyptus grove - no calls - backs russet, no tail contrast - birds secretive. Sept. 14 One along creek W eucalyptus grove repeatedly flitting to pick something from trunk back of tree (usually at crotch) - bird active but silent - evergreen broad-leaf tree. Sept 15. I was in my office on N side of MV2 - throughout morning I heard no calls. At 12:40 pm a Swainson Thrush repeated its "whick" all several times from oak or Anceyge outside. Is this an influx of migrants or do some individuals reside along creek to W, being silent after early August?
