K Dixon 1947 Journal 53. June 17. Yellowstone River, 7 mi NE Glendive, 2000 ft., Dawson Co., Montana. Hear[d] Horned Owl in area to west of camp at 07:30 PM. Sun had not set; was visible through break in overcast. June 18. Yellowstone River, 7 mi. NE Glendive, 2000 ft., Dawson Co, Montana. Completely overcast, raining steadily with only intermittent lulls. Calm until 08:30 when wind came up from east, shifting to southerly and then to westerly by noon. Velocity up to 8 mph. In field from 06:00 until noon. Few birds singing during rain, Red-eyed Vires and Lazuli Bunting being most conspicuous. Worked in area of almost solid birch elder woods (occasional elme), many dead stumps and no undergrowth. Continuous the [illegible] of wild rose 2 1/2 feet high bordered this wooded area along entire boundary with meadow to north. Height of trees in woodland was 20-25 feet. I experienced difficulty with .38 shells; on several occasions these failed to kill birds such as Horned Vireo and Chat at ranges less than 15 yards when direct hits seemed to be indicated. Collected a F Red-eyed Vireo in woods in tree adjacent to [illegible] of this species. Collected Black-capped Chickadee (see species account) and F Yellowthroat. Latter was with O which had been pursuing her in apparent attempt at copulation. Collected Lazuli Bunting 5 in a clearing at east edge of these woods (see species account). Later shot a ? which I was not able to recover.
