K Dixon 1950 Sitta pygmaea May 27. Boca Spring, 6000 ft, Nevada Co, Calif. Windy in PM, clouding in. At 2:43 I approached nest area where I had taken ?, 402 last night. A nuthatch called excitedly from juniper to SE of snag and flew toward E. He returned 25 minutes later and I collected him (♂, 407) This bird presumably was the male of 402 since two birds were making frequent trips to the nest cavity ± 45 ft above ground last evening. On one occasion one bird gave food to the other who reentered the cavity with the food. The ? had laid and had a well-developed brood patch which he fledged. May 28. I located near(?) a nuthatch ± 40 feet up in dead snag. Only one bird appeared to be visiting the cavity and it invariably left in < minute or less. I judge that this was a ♂ and that the ♀ was still incubating. 7:30-8:00 AM. At 8:15 I noted a nuthatch pursuing a Mountain Chickadee in and out among branches of ? junipers ± 50 feet NE(?) of this nuthatch. The nuthatch gave no calls, the chickadee gave a loud call "chickadee" as if disturbed. The latter then flew south into dense stand of young juniper & I lost track of the action.
