KDixon 1950 Aphelocoma c. Jan 24. NE face San Pablo Ridge, Contra Costa Co., Calif. Partly cloudy, cool morning, 7:30. Heard prolonged "croak" call of this species from woodland in draw where watering trough situated, the first instance this year. Jan 31. 9:30 - clear, calm. Jay perched in branches ± 18 inches from top of dormant willow on chaparral slope. Sparrow Hawk flew to perch in top of willow and jay dropped down rapidly and into adjacent coffee berry. Feb 7. 4 on SE of sking flew up and to W by twoe - "croak" call given prior to my approach & their flight. Feb 9. Group of 5 in woods E of watering trough, Guilds II - 2 + 2 flew off; single bird remaining skulked off in different direction, Mar 4. Putah Creek, 1/2 mi. SE Davis, Yolo Co., Calif. Partly cloudy with over dimmed; calm. Streamcourse vegetation of leafless trees - valley oak, maple, black Walnut. 7 Scrub Jays sighted. birds calling "sqriel sqriel sqriel" very way. After 1/2 hour I hunting on the Williamson property I shot one jay which flew away after dropping a few contour feather. A few minutes later at 4:00 PM, I saw a jay perched motionless on lower branches of a willow(?) This bird seemed lifeless and I took it with a load of 10's at close range. Preserved as an alcohol #394 May 12. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda Co., Calif. 2:15 - S bank of creek opposite Botanic Garden. Two Scrub Jays in woods near titmouise (near 34) nest. I have not noted them here during the past 2 weeks. Cries of young titmice in nest are audible & perhaps attract jays. One of jays gave "roak" "kra a aa", a call heard often during the next few minutes.
