K Dixon 1950 Cyanocitta stelleri Apr. 2. Cold Spr., 4 mi. by road W Soda Spr., in Placer Co., Calif. 6000 ft. large area of lodgepole pine (trees somewhat strunked); snow cover 2-3 ft deep. Group of 5 Steller Jays in grove of pines giving 3 types of call notes: a chorus of nasal notes "aark aark aark", a rapid sequence of sharp notes "wick wick wick" and the harsh "ray ray ray" sequence heard only once. Apparently other Steller Jays nearby as calls heard there. 2:15 PM, clear, sunny, light breeze. Slope E Donner Pass, 6800 ft. 2:35 PM; wind strong from W. Saw Steller Jay moving about in juniper tree - blueback and blackishhead unmistakable (Martha heard call notes also). Vegetation scattered, mostly Jeffrey pine. Apr. 3. 6 mi. SW Carson City Ormsby Co. Nevada (or Hwy 50) lower edge of yellow pine belt. Heard calls "kuk kuk kuk" and saw 3 or 4 Steller Jays in pines at 5300 ft. elev. (No snow on ground). Vicinity of Strawberry at 6200 ft., El Dorado Co., Calif. Area of yellow pine & incense cedar - snow on ground. Heard call "wick wick wick" at about 5:00 PM on clear day. (Area on Hwy 50 about 3 mi.
