K DIXON 1950 Empidonax difficilis July 28. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda Co., Calif. Sunny, cool; breeze from W 1-3 mph. I located a pair of Western Flycatchers feeding young in the nest at 10:40 am. Both birds were feeding. I waited nearby with food in beaks but would not approach nest as I stood in open nearby. Nest was located in an oak near S fence of Botanic Garden on ridge between 1st & Second tributaries flowing in from N here. The easterly trunk (vertical) of the oak had 2 scars where branches had fallen off - this trunk was riddled with decay, yet still bore a crown of foliage. The nest was in the upper one of these about 15 feet above ground. Nest appeared to be behind a remnant of trunk, facing SE.
