K Dixon 1950 Empidonax difficilis May 12. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda Co, Calif. Found nest in groove in trunk of laurel on W bank of 2nd tributary of creek inside Botanic Garden south fence. F flushed from nest which contained 4 eggs, which appeared pinkish from a distance of several feet. Sketch from memory. grove 3-4 inches deep & perhaps skittle wide nest set in depression at bottom of groove at height 1 3/4' above ground approximately NW-facing part of trunk. May 22. Found nest in clump of grass on E bank of brook in 1st draw W Paletty lab. Nest of grass, perhaps not completed (no eggs); bird making frequent trips to it. Nest at edge of 3-4 foot drop in steep bank- (oak woodland). June 18. Martha & I visited this nest about 6:20 PM; clear, calm. Nest contained 3 blind young with feather tracts well-developed. Flycatcher appeared in oak along brook to S and perched on "inside" of a bough. Bird nervous at our presence, shifting perch, jerking tail. We moved down toward road 140 feet & bird flew to herbage on W bank, then to nest & did not reappear (brooding?). The nestlings were quiet and did not raise heads or move otherwise as we moved grass aside to look at them. July 22. Sunny afternoon. In canyon 3:05 - 4:45 pm in area along creek from pool to E end Botanic Garden. Heard only one flycatcher of this species call from along 2nd tributary at S fence of Botanic Garden.
