As we drove along State Hwy #1 which follows the east shore of Bolinas Bay at this point, a kingfisher, which was perched on telephone wire at edge of bay, flew ahead of the car. The bird perched momentarily twice on the wire at distances of perhaps 100 feet ahead of its previous position. After being frightened for the third time, the kingfisher flew steadily parallel to the road, a few feet above the water, north along the shore of the bay. It flew thus for a distance of not less than 300 yards; we matched its speed in the car, the speedometer register- ing 26 miles per hour, unchanged during this time. Finally, with the car alongside its position, the bird swooped upward to perch on the wire as we moved past. July 30. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda Co., Calif. sunny, cool morning. I heard a sequence of calls indicating that a kingfisher was flying up the canyon in area S of Botanic Garden at 8:00 am.
