Otus asio
Mar. 1. Univ. Calif. Campus, Alameda Co., Calif.
In the course of a number
of evenings on Campus, I have not heard Screech Owl calls
where these owls have been active in previous years, such
as in the oaks S of Life Sci. Bldg. Lois Taylor also reported
a similar impression of absence of this species. At this
time of the year in 1947 and I believe also in 1948 Screech
Owls could be heard or seen at dusk on the cornices of
South Hall. I have not noted them there this year. Are
the activities of gardeners and/or tree surgeons responsible
in part?
Nov. 20 Clear evening 8:15 heard Screech Owl calling from
cypress-like trees N of plane tree grove to N of Campanile.
Dec 20. Clear, calm night. - I heard a Screech Owl call
twice from oaks S of Life Sciences Bldg. as I walked
past at 11:00 pm.
Dec 21. 6:30 clear evening. Heard "bouncing-ball" calls from
trees along Strawberry Creek SW Life Sci Bldg.
