Sept. 23 Queen Canyon, '7200 ft., 1 1/4 mi NE Benton Sta., Calif., in Mineral Co., Nevada. Pinon Jay - singly as a rule Clark's Nutcracker - I watched one individual hammer at a green pinon cone, sever it from the tree & carry it away. At another place, a nutcracker was tecking at a cone when a Scrub Jay drove it away & proceeded to pick at the cone for itself. Scrub Jay - a few seen Mtn Chickadee - flock of 4 seen at 3:15. 2 hrs later, 2+2 A flock of about 9 (one taken, #461). I took a White-breasted Nutcracker (RFJ # ) foraging in pinon with several chickadees but & not seen to be a member of the flock. One chickadee sang repeatedly a song with Meadowlark gracuity to ending - - sicha see lee a pleer I wasn't able to collect that individual. At the bottom of the hill I flushed a Borwell which kept moving & afforded me to chance to shoot. We noted Black-tailed Jackrabbits on the slope below camp. Sagebrush lizards were few in number, the myriads of young individuals seen at the other camp being not at all in evidence. We broke camp at 8:00 and drove to Benton Sta. and then to hearing, Bridgeport & camped on the West Walker River below the Sonora Pass road junction.
