48. Sept. 23. Queen Canyon, 11 1/4 mi. NE Benton Sta., Calif., +7200 ft., in Mineral Co., Nev. Shortly before noon, I walked along the stream N of camp; N boundary of Inyo Nat. Forest camp X+ road crest of 1st ridge stream courses some water escaped from pipes presumably leading to land in valley below. Growth of willow and other shrubs was dense. I noted Robin, Western Tanager & dead Cooper Hawk and Orange- crowned Warbler here. Johnston took one of latter + a Yellow Warbler here. From 3:00 until 5:30, I followed a deer trail upslope as shown by row of XX's.. judging from depth of deer foot- prints & dampness of soil in shade, rain must have fallen in this area a 10 days or so previously. While air was generally calm, clouds moved in from W from whence we heard thunder - overcast was never complete but afternoon was cool. Vegetation was denser on slope near west of E-W trending ridge. I saw no mammal sign other than deer.
