Birds quiet generally; we noticed Steller Jay, Whin-tit, Brown Towhee, Plain Titmouse (loud) and Swainson Thrush (call only). From the picnic grounds we could hear the chorus of Red-winged Blackbirds from the margin of the lake. The water appeared to have evaporated, leaving the soft mud covered with aquatic plants. Rough estimate would have been 500-600 birds, most apparently males which had undergone body molt. The birds were gathering or had gathered to roost on cat tails at the eastern end of the lake. Aug 29. Pinole Creek, 3 mi. SW Pinole, 250 ft., Contra Costa Co., Calif. Foggy and calm 8:00 a.m. - 9:00 a.m.; cleared & breeze blew down canyon thereafter. Henry Childs and I hunted on the property of a Mr. Simas from 8:00 - 10:00, in an area of brushy & wooded slope S of road & creek. The lower slope was clothed with Baccharis and Plus with a few Willows & Fraxinus scattered thru; where brush had been cleared, tall mustard stood. Higher on the steep slope where I hunted 8:40 - 9:40 there was a woodland of Laurel - Oak - Buckeye with scattered low underbrush of Rhue, Osmanonia, snowberry, hazel, etc.: I found fewer birds in this woodland than at the edge of the brush below, both in total numbers and species representation. I saw no mammals other than one Odocoileus doe; the only reptiles were some lizards in brush, probably fence lizards. I took only me bird, a Hudson Vireo (# 450) Turkey Vulture Red-tailed Hawk
