K Dixon 1950 30. May 30. Big Springs Public Camp, +/- 9 1/2 mi. S Mono Mills, Mono Co., Calif. Steller Jay - heard lone individual about 9:45 giving woaking "kraaa" almost identical to Scrubjay call. Also a rather quiet "owk owk owk" in addition to the loud "kuk kuk kuk" call. Only 2 of these jays seen. White-breasted Nuthatch - one a few yards from camp foraging on ground for several minutes. Pigmy Nuthatch - one taken Mtn. Bluebird Violet-green Swallow Robin Mtn. Chickadee Townsend Solitaire Yellow Warbler Warbling Vireo singing in pines 100 yds from stream Western Tanager Chipping Sparrow Greentailed Towhee Cassin Finch - several singing in pines - often difficult to see - when disturbed, would fly up to several hundred yards distance. One taken at edge of pines - bird sang repeatedly & was answered by another 300 yds to north. This individual (M, 426) flew down to perch on cone at base of tree, then perched on branch +/- 4 feet off ground when I took it. Bird in "9 plumage" (testis 7mm.) had what appeared to be abdominal segments of a stapheplined beetle (brown + black) in bill. North Rush Creek, Mono Lake, Mono Co., Calif. We took 10 adult California Gulls in about 15 minutes during noon hour. Yellow Warbler in willows? (dense thickets) outposts for singing of M were 1/5 yards apart (paced). Violet-green Swallow also present.
