Journal 21. May 10. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda Co., Calif. I was gone from 12:15 - 1:30. Weather: Clear & calm in PM. Cedar Waxwing seemed more numerous in PM but not so much as on Monday (oaks in Botanic Garden). Hermit Warbler in oaks of Titmouse Territory 34 at 3:00 & bird silent Solitary Vires in same place Pileated Warbler near along road at edge of madrones Next a few inches off ground suspended & also covered by leaves of a blackberry vine. (4 eggs inside) Downy Woodpecker st. along 2nd Tributary inside garden Swainson Thrush on S bank of creek repeatedly chased 2 Robins through woodland 1:20 - 3:20. May 12. Foggy, dead calm. In canyon 7:45 - 8:40, 9:55 - 11:20, X See Junco, species acc'ts, Parus, X Cyanocitta, Athelcoma, Empidorax. Fresh gopher workings in draw W lab, first seen recently. May 13. Foggy, cold. In canyon at 7:50 and again 9:25 - 9:50 and 11:25 - 11:45. See species acc't Parus inornatus. House Finch - flock + 25 in mustard patch near Veterinary Science Bldge (along road) at 10:00. Pine Siskin 3 in oak along creek opposite lab at 2:30 PM as I stopped briefly in that area. May 14. Davis Yolo Co., Calif. Clear sunny day. Driving around town, noted Brewer Blackbird chasing Sparrow Hawk on one occasion and several Brewers mobbing a Crow. Cedar Waxwing seen and one Swainson Thrush in clump of trees in residential area.
