Horned Owl - one inside Botanic Garden along 1st tributary joining creek from N. 10:30 AM. American Goldfinch - foraging in oaks inside Garden Grass seems to have taken over middle portion of ridge between the 2 tributaries - a few dead stalks of mustard and Conium in center but these plants still occur near edge of this clearing - shade a possible factor? May 6. In canyon 7:35-45 and 9:15-10:10 AM - sunny; light breeze from W. See species acc'ts Parus inornatus, Phleucterus, hoplothrys, Pipilo fusceus. Lazuli Bunting or singing from oak & willow SW of Botanic Garden Robin - seen carrying nesting material into nest in laurel on E bank of tributary (2nd) S of Botanic Garden fence. Returned at 11:50 and Harrison Pyher, who was with me saw a Warbling Vireo on nest. Bird sang from nest several times. Nest in twig in upper part of alder on N side and + 20 feet above ground. Bush-hit pair building NE of pool. May 7.
