KDixon 1950 Journal 18. May 3. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda Co, Calif. In canyon 8:30 - 11:30 AM Clouds passing over but no rain (rained in past 2 days). Cool (breath condensed as steam). I worked in area along stream opposite Poultry lab to E end of pool and parts of the three draws on N side of canyon from Poultry lab W (see spec. acc't laus inornatus for details) My impression is that understory growth in woodland of 1st draw W lab, particularly poison oak, is less dense than it was in 1947 but that poison-oak-Baccharis-elderberry of some of the upper, treeless slopes is more dense. Likewise, some areas along the creek as S of Botanic Garden are more overgrown; the bridge across the creek there is impassable except on hands + knees. Birds noted: American Goldfinch in willows upsteam from pool - not singing. Species absent from extensive willow growth along brook N of lab. See spec. acc'ts: Oporornis, Psaltriparus May 4. In canyon from 2:45 PM - 4:10 PM Sunny; breeze ± 9 mph from W. See species acc'ts laus inornatus, Oporornis, Phoenicurus Pipilo fuscus May 5. In canyon 8:20 AM - 11:30 AM. Clear, generally calm. I spent most of morning in area along creek and S part of Botanic Garden, visiting draw W of lab at 8:20 and again at 10:50. See species acc'ts laus inornatus, Oporornis, Phoenicurus, Pipilo fuscus. Other birds of note: Wood Pewee perched in sunlight on Bot. Garden fence at 9:35 had shifted perch a few feet by 9:50 and was still in same place at 10:45 - only note a plaintive "peru" Western Tanager (?) in oak in Botanic Garden
