Anna Hummingbird, Allen Hummingbird, Downy Woodpecker, Western Flycatcher Swainson Thrush - abundant in oak woodland, giving single wheee "faint"; one on N-facing slope at 6:45 gave two "swirling" phrases of song several times but never a full song. Hutton Vireo (singing), Warbling Vireo, Orange-crowned and Pileated Warblers, Yellow Warbler (song) "chi" "chuh" Black-headed Grosbeak - see spec. acct. Purple Finch - singing almost continuously. Green-bellied Goldfinch - heard in woodland (calls) Apr 23. Wildcat Creek, Contra Costa Co., Calif. Calm, sunny morning. Martha & I worked along a tributary leading in from the E at the level of the baseball diamond in Tilden Park (near tennis courts), 7:40 - 9:15. Birds noted in addition to the usual residents: Rough-winged Swallow - 3 flying over meadow; flying over stream near culvert, perhaps drinking. Black-headed Grosbeak - songs heard from several sites in oak woods American Goldfinch - pairs scattered along willow-bordered stream & singing. Tolmie Warbler - ? in willows and also singing one slope in woodland where understory dense. Orange-crowned Warbler - 2 noted in willows not singing Calif Quail - both "kow" notes (single) and "assembly" call heard.
