KDixon 1950 Journal 14. Apr. 16 Monterey Bay, off Point Pinos, Monterey Co, Calif. flying by singly, all plumage stages from milky white to dark gray with wing feathers white. Sooty Shearwater usually in small groups 2-5 Pacific loon flying by in small groups My impression was that we moved nearer shore after first Black-footed Albatross was sighted. We circled in one spot where fish oil and tachers were spread on water. Next 3 albatrosses followed the ship and Western and California Gulls were present as were Sooty Shearwaters but no Fulmars. A small alced flying by was not identified Pacific loon still passing; 1 Common loon. The area of these observations appeared to me to be ± 4 miles off Monterey Peninsula (to NW). On return trip about 11:30, Surf Scoter flock ± 6 seen and closer to shore, lone Pigeon Guillemot in breeding plumage. Hummingbird (unidentified) several seen flying across bay. California Murre in harbor, singly, NW of Hopkins Marine Station. Brandt Coronante with auricular plumes noted. Eared Grebe in breeding plumage near pier. Clear sunny day, breeze from NW [written up Apr 20] KD Apr 20 Strawberry Canyon, Univ Calif Campus, Alameda Co, Calif. Clear, sunny day. Martha and I walked up Canyon Rd. at 5:30 PM, returning to Stadium about 7:00 PM. Noted these birds: Cooper Hawk (?) flew down canyon toward trees upslope + SE of Bently farmhouse calling "kuk kuk kuk". Smaller hawk (♂?) flew toward her from those trees, then accompanied her as she went out of sight beyond trees about 6:00 PM.
