Davis Yolo Co., Calif. to Reno, Washoe Co., Nevada By the time we had reached 1000 ft. elav., we were into Bigger Pine - horse oak - Blue-oak, the latter only slightly leafed out. This belt appeared to have a narrow range altitudinally, since scattered yellow pines began to appear about 1500 ft. We reached Donner Summit about 2:30. Snow pack in this area varied from 1ft - 5 ft roughly; snow appeared soft. At Donner lake approx 6000 ft several Robins and one Say's Thrasher noted. Vegetation Ponderosa and Lodgepole pines; apparently the upper limit of Great Basin sagebrush. Ponderosa extends downward to about the level of the Nevada line at Verdi (below which there is sparse sagebrush growth. Pinon-juniper seems to be absent along Hgwry 40 at this point. Arrived in Reno about 4:15 after leisurely drive. 17 mi. NW Reno, Nevada, , in Lassen Co., Calif. We left Reno at 4:40 PM driving NW on US/Hgwry 395. A few miles out of town the sagebrush appeared denser and taller, perhaps less grazed. (No cattle in evidence today). We stopped inside Calif. about 2 miles N of the Lassen-Sierra county line, where there were scattered junipers or a sagebrush slope (scattered Pursila also). Neostoma - saw one nest in each of two lovejunipers perhaps 25 yards apart. Nest spherical, compact, one with dried juniper leaves. Caris picked up lower jaw (2 rami fused) of coyote or dog about 100 yds. off highway. We drove in east of highway on a dirt road to a point 1.3 miles E of highway. Here I looked for Plain T...
