Petal Cr., 1/2 mi SE Davis, Yolo Co., Calif. mid-afternoon, partly calm. hunted in streamside cloudy with sun shining dimly; calm. hunted in streamside (leafless) woodland of valley oak, maple & walnut adjacent to newly-planted barley field 3:30 - 4:15 PM. At sunset noted 2 separate flocks of 1-36 [illegible] cross on grass not near water nor vegetative cover. Sparrow Hawk on telephone wires at this time. Mch 12. Lake Temescal, Oakland, Alameda Co., Calif. Clear day; light breeze from N. On brush-covered, partly wooded slope W of Lake 3:30 - 5:00 PM, accompanied by Harrison Pyker. Brush consisted of Rhue, Coylue, Ceanothus Baccharis and Cercocarpus? willow (in catkin stage), River (in flower). Birds noted: Mallard 1 pr. Coot Mourning Dove Anna hummingbird in eucalyptus (blossoming); still active Rufous hummingbird at sunset
