Entered Gulch II at 8:40 AM, working down to area around old orchard, then back to watering trough by 9:50. See under Lophortyx and check list p 3. Hyla chona in pool near watatrough at 7:00 startled upon my approach and was [illegible] not resumed. At 10:05 House Finch singing incomplete song from Baccharis; Downy Woodpecker nearby. Feb. 9. Partly overcast (high clouds); no frost, fog over very; breeze from E &-3 mph; sun hazy. Entered Gulch II at 7:00 AM - see species acct Lophortyx, Toxostoma and checklist journal p 3. 2 Crows flew over going N at 10:50 AM - Hyla chona from pond E of watering trough at this time. Other birds noted: Red-tailed Hawk, Horned Owl. I departed at 1:45 by which time a light shower had begun (complete overcast by 11:00 AM). Feb 11. Clear & sunny after rain of Feb 10; no frost; breeze from E+N 3-4mph diminishing. In area 8:00 - 8:40 (Gulch II). See acct Lophortyx c. also checklist journal p.3. In addition, I noted one Brewer Blackbird of Feb/12. Clear & mild; calm. In area 10:55 - 11:25 (Gulch II). See acct Lophortyx & Toxostoma. Feb 19. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda Co., Calif. In canyon 7:00 proceeding up Canyon Rd (accompanied by Martha) in vicinity of pool & partly bath until 10:00; after this we walked up road S of Botanic Garden as far as 2nd Tributary, returning to mouth of canyon by 11:00. High, thin over- cast, sun not bright, calm. Alder + willows with catkins, north- western oaks coming out in new foliage; leaves appearing on thimbleberry, Ribes in flower. See species accounts for
