KDixon 1950 Journal Feb 2. NE slope San Pablo Ridge, Contra Costa Co., Calif. See spec. acct hoploptyx. Feb 3. Entered area of Gulch II at 9:00 AM Overcast, threatening; breeze cold front, ±6mph. Ground not frozen although scatter d cakes of ice remained as in hoof-prints etc.: Rain (light) after 11:10. See species acct's Hoploptyx, Falco sparverius Colaptes. Willow trees with staminate catkins appearing. A few Raccharis coming out in bloom. Snowberry bushes coming out in new leaf. In Gulch III I noted a colony of poison oak with statulale twigs, a deformity apparently genetic. I noted a striped Skunk ambuling through chaparral at 10:30 AM (see Hoploptyx C., page 9). Cooper(?) Hawk noted at same time. Varied Through along stream in woodland, lower part of Gulch III Feb 5. Davis Yolo Co., Calif. Noted Mockingbird in Phoenice bush. Absence of Robin this year commented upon by the Williamson family. Feb 6. NE slope San Pablo Ridge, Contra Costa Co., Calif. In area 5:30- 6:10 PM. Partly cloudy; dead calm. See species acct Hoploptyx In Gulch II at 5:45 choruses of Myla originated from 2 ponds (near watering trough and near 2nd side clear). This is the first time this year I have noted congregation of these foods; previous calling has been of isolated individuals or smaller groups. I saw a Horned Owl in eucalyptus tree near E entrance to Tilden Park - owl flew from one tree to another and perched nearly vertical on horizontal branch. Horns visible (6:05, ½ hour after sunset)
