K Dixon 1950 Journal Jan 25. NE slope San Pablo Ridge, Contra Costa Co., Calif. here Say Phoebe on sunny grass-herb slope. In woodland near old cabin-site I heard Winter Wren and Purple Finch, latter only single notes not full song. House Finch seen not singing. Returned to area 4:45 - 5:40 to revisit lophotyx feeding stations. (Routine trip - see spec. acct) Jan 26. Clear, calm, colder than yesterday. By 10:00 partial overcast of strato-cumulus clouds. In area 8:45 - 9:50. See spec.acct lophotyx. Noted adult Sharp shinned Hawk in area but nothing else of note. Oakland, Alameda Co., Calif. Noted a F Merganser (probably Red-breasted as throat not conspicuously white) on riverwon at Claremont & Russell stls. Bird swam along with bill under water raising head intermittently Time 10:00AM Jan 27. NE slope San Pablo Ridge Contra Costa Co., Calif. Overcast; no frost. In area 8:50 - 9:50. See acct Lophotyx c. Saw a flock of 24 Canada Geese on ridge E of watering pond SE of old cabin site. Birds flew as soon as I rounded the slope into view. Jan 28. Martha & I took grail trap into study area at 5:30 PM Clear, cold, calm, moonlit evening. Ground soaked following rains yesterday. We heard Canada Geese honking intermittently also Horned Owl. Departed after 6:00 PM. Jan 29. In area 8:30 AM - 10:40 AM, proceeding down main gulch past watering hole to slope E of cabin site, thence to cabin site and cypress there then S up slope through woodland to path E of watering hole at 9:40.
