K Dixon 1950 Journal Jan 17. NE face San Pablo Ridge Contra Costa Co, Calif. On ridge 8:45- 9:50. Overcast with fog hanging on ridge top, fog clearing by 9:30. Calm. Walked N to Cattletrough Draw, left bait for hophornbys and returned. On the slope east of a waterhole SE of the cattletrough there were ±250 Canada Geese spread over about ½ acre; they were looking considerably possibly from seeing me ¼ mile away. Little bird activity; following species noted: Flicker, Wren- it, Plain Titmouse, Scrub Jay, Meadowlark (Roof ±35). Jan.21 7:45-8:45. Overcast with intermittent Southerly breeze. Ground Dian, left grain for grail. Saw Red-tailed Hawk, heard Wren-it and Calif. Thrasher singing (Latter from slope S of string). At 8:25 1/5 California (?) Gulls flew over ridge to lake (actual count, 98+17). Steller Jay heard lower in draw. Tilden Regional Park, Contra Costa Co, Calif. Noted about ½ dozen Trithurus (tornacis) dead on ½ mile of road near the Arboretum. Salamanders must have been moving toward the creek which was nearby. Movement was taking place at 7:30 AM when I saw 2 of the newts crossing the road going toward the creek in which direction most of them seemed to be going. Jan 24. NE face San Pablo Ridge Contra Costa Co, Calif. In grail study area 8:45-9:45. Noted mixed flock of 50 or 60 small passerines, mostly Zonotrichias (both species) and Oregon Juncos; one Slate-colored Junce, 2 House Finches (10) 4 Yellow-backed Goldfinches (20+? 28), Brown Towhee(1). Jan 25. In area 8:45-9:55. Clear, cold, calm. Ice on puddles, frost on ground which was frozen where mud was saturated with water. Large flock of juncos; sparrows seemed separate from them.
