KDixon 1949 Journal Dec 17 1 mi NE Alviso, Santa Clara Co., Calif. Sibley, Rudd and I left the South Bay Yacht Club, Alviso at 9:15 taking rowboat on Trailer towed by Rudd's car. It had been raining intermittently since midnight. We drove out 'Esteri' road and entered a locked gate to the San Jose garbage dump and surround- ing marshes owned by Leslie Salt Co. We launched the boat in main channel of the slough and proceeded inward into the marsh composed of Salicornia and Spartina. The tide was still rising then (about 10:00 Am). Passerines such as Song Sparrow, Pipit, Savannah Sparrow were perching atop the vegetation still emergent. On one duck hunter's blind there were 5 or 6 Song Sparrows perched on posts + 2 feet above surface. One Sparrow chased another off as the latter attempted to perch. Paintail - individuals scattered throughout marsh - also in small flocks Green-winged Teal - noted occasionally - singly or in flocks 4-5 Coot - scattered individuals Mallard (1-CGS) (Ruddy-1) Cinnamon Teal (1) California Gull fairly common Willet - small flocks + single individuals - abundant Avocet - one small flock Least Sandpiper a few in flight (notes ID by Sibley) At 10:43 (calculated high for Alviso) tide was still rising. There was about one hour lag where we were.
