K Dixon 1949 Journal Nov 18. NE face San Pablo Ridge Contra Costa Co., Calif. On ridge 8:55 - 10:00 studying grail (see spec. acct). Noted nothing exceptional except soaring hawks on ridge crest (see under bophorty). At 10:00 saw 6-8 cedar Waywings and afterward 7 Robins flying E at Inspiration point (low saddle in hills ?) Nov 21. Foggy morning; in area 8:40 - 9:20 ± visibility low. Birds quiet except for Golden-crowned Sparrow, Zonotrichia flosse seemed larger than previously seen as did grail corps on 2 occasions. See bophorty spec. acct. Nov 24. Putah Creek ½ mile SE Davis, Yolo Co., Calif. Noon of sunny day; calm. Noted 39 Crows in freshly ploughed field and about 20 more perched in walnut tree at edge of grove adjacent. In cottonwoods oaks and walnut trees along creek noted Oregon Juncoz, White-crowned X Song Sparrow, Acorn Woodpecker and Scrub Jay. A loose group of 6 of the latter in tree; 3 took one splitting the group, 3 moving E & two west. I collected one of the latter later on, Also saw one Sparrow Hawk overhead and heard a Flicker. Nov 25 En route from Davis Yolo Co., Calif. Martha & I drove W from Davis toward Winters at 10:00, how fog was clearing. We contin- ued through Winters and on State Hwy 28. About 5 miles W of Winters the road enters the foothills of the inner Coast Range. The road follows the canyon of Putah Creek into the hills. Vegetation along the creek was chiefly cottonwood, Black Walnut and willows with scattered Valley Oak. Higher on the slopes were Blue Oak and Digger Pines with some Live Oaks. In some level areas orchards were seen.
