S White River, 6100 ft., Navajo Co., Arizona Heard occasionally in Pinon-Juniper - Birds wary for most part + difficult to see (♂ #379 an exception, perched on dead limb; permitted close approach). Call notes a nasal creak of rising inflection (ending not as high pitched as in coastal Calif. birds). Then a squealing call often given when leaving perch: sciu sciu sciu uttered very rapidly. I took another ♂ before 8 AM in this same area near rim above tributary to White River. Half an hour later I scared up a group of 7 Scrub Jays on the slope below this rim (Pinon-Juniper- deciduous oak). Birds worked further downslope giving calls listed above,
