K Dixon 1949 34. Journal April 28 8 mi S White river, 6100 ft, Navajo Co. Arizona. I proceeded up draw [illegible] of camp and noted Bredled Titmice in oaks & junipers - collected Red-shafted Flicker (#383) Returned to camp at 7:00. Off Owls in snag nearly especially silent, calling only a few times after 9:00 AM. April 29. Clear + calm early (clouds at time of sunrise soon cleared, after 7:00) Wind from NE, up to 8 mph shifted to S and increased to 12 mph after 8:00. I hunted in draw N of camp from 6:10 AM until 10:30 AM, spending some time observing Bredled and Plain Titmice (see species acc'ts). Audubon Warblers - myriads almost underfoot - seemingly in every bush. - not bothered by wind. Chipping Sparrow - migrants passing through - once I saw apparent established bird chase off one of these newcomers, proceeding at edge of a loose flock. Blue-gray Gnatcatcher - one foraging in low shrubs Black-headed Grosbeak - & singing from conspicuous perch Spotted Towhee - 2 or 3 ?? in oak brush - singing Green-tailed Towhee - 1 in similar habitat Western Tanager - & flew by heading N Violet-green Swallow - overhead; seemingly more numerous than on previous day Grae Warbler - one singing in yellowbrier Wind continued steadily throughout day - birds generally inactive although Audubon Warblers and Chipping Sparrows remained flocked in bushes and
