ADixon 1949 Journal 32. April 27. 8 mi. S Whiteriver, 6100 ft., Navajo Co., Ariz. Hell slope to W covered chiefly with low oaks with considerable taller yellow pines; few junipers little undergrowth. Meadow J variable width often with pines on it. Cover drying bunch grasses including side oats grama; juniper seedlings widely established. Only bird heard was a crow; then Cassin Kingbirds. Sunset about 6:57; at this time I scared up a Hairy Woodpecker from an oak. Followed this way bird to perch in a tall snag where I shot at it. The bird was shaken up but flew out of sight track of it. Noted Sparrowhawk perched in top of snag about 10 minutes after sunset. 3 Elf Owls congregated in yellow pines after dark (are species acc't. Also heard Spotted Screech Owl. Clear April 28. Calm morning; light clouds to E & S; wind from S after 9:00. left camp at 5:55 AM going up hill to NE where I hunted yesterday. Collected pair of Plain Titi Mouse (see species acc't). Heard others; a fairly common breeder here. hogheadeal Shrike - noted lone bird perched atop isolated juniper in opening in woodland. Took this bird (& not breeding, fat #377). I proceeded N to rim overlooking a tributary running approximately SW into the White River. This steep NE- facing slope had pines + junipers of mesa top extending downward on it but in addition had a deciduous oak (Plant Cat. # 385) a white-flowering currant (# 386), Lencocarpus + a scrub oak.
