He had been here for 15 years and told something of the game situation: Elk which were taboo for thachos, Deer which they ate, and Turkeys, the latter plentiful. 1939, a year of little meat and turkeys heavy snow cut the population estimated at 20,000 in half; recovery has been slow. We proceeded STE to Bonito Creek & then east of there when camping spots on the creek did not look promising. We camped temporarily on a ridge beyond Bonito C. about 6:08 PM. April 27. ±1 mi. S Bonito Creek, 6750 ft., Apache Co., Arizona Area of small yellow pine (50 ft x 1½ ft dia), mature juniper and live and deciduous oaks - level. Russell called up a Flammulated Screech Owl last night. Heard Steller Jay Purus gambeli Robin Red-shafted Flicker Bridled Titmouse, Pygmy Nuthatch We drove E after 6:30 climbing upward into pure stand of yellow pine above 7000 ft (this 6-8 mi E of above locality). At 7:00 we saw 4 mule Deer and 5 wild Turkeys in pine woods near natural waterhole. (1,350 ft.) Albert Squirrels were rather common in this same area. We stopped at a pond ±30 ft across with new growth of a rush-like plant (flat leaves) 4-5 inches tall. No amphibians evident. We drove back down, crossed Bonito Creek and camped at a point .5 mi by road westerly of Chino Spring at 9:00. 8 mi S Whiteriver, 6100 ft., Navajo Co., Arizona Area in vicinity of camp a shallow valley draining southerly toward Black River.
