27. NDixon 1949 Journal April 25 Sawmill, 27 mi. NE Globe, 5600 ft., Gila Co., Arizona a few yards away. Painted Redstart - one & collected in yellow pines . Bird gave a Black Phoebe - like note gleeb Bridled Titmouse - heard on sunny slope (oaks) Solitary Vireo - one taken, & giving disconnected series of song phrases. Russell reported seeing one yesterday. Wild Turkey - at 6:35 I saw an individual which I took to be a hen walking upstream from a pool in Candy Creek bottom - bird must have gone up since- crossed N-facing slope although track to water led from oak-covered S-facing slope. Examined small grove of Castanos - trees mostly about 4-6 inches in diameter and had no Sapauder drilling marks.. I proceeded up a draw leading to the south to investigate some screaming noises heard (I thought possibly a parrot). Found a dead Peromyscus, well decayed. I heard the call again and sawa Goshawk fly into a snag. I took this bird (& #367) crop contents not recognizable. Other birds present: Acorn Woodpecker, Arizona Jay, Pygmy Nuthatch, Grace & Black-throated Gray Warbler, Red-shafted Flicker, Violet-green Swallow, Purple Martin, Mourning Dove, Band-tailed Pigeon, Cassin Kingbird. Notably absent was Steller Jay. In walking back to camp I scared up a Chipmunk in rocks of retaining banks along road. The chipmunk ran along side of me, hiding, then resuming his flight for a brief distance of 25 yards.
