K Dixon 1949 Journal 26. April 24. Sawmill, 27 mi. NE Globe, 5600 ft., Gila Co., Ariz. this morning. Dropped down into yellow pine for next half hour and collected Cassin Kingbird in dead snag. Sunset about 7:00. Heard first Flamm- ulated Screech Owl at 7:15. April 25. Clear early; later high clouds moved in from east - overcast by evening. Left camp at 6:30 proceeding west perhaps 1 mile beyond Heltz Ranger Station. I hunked along a rocky stream course until about 9:15. Vegetation chiefly yellow pine of good size (60-80 ft.); some blue oaks. The latter everywhere in this country seem to be yellowing as though about to shed leaves. Brook bottom rocky and sandy; occasional small pools remain. Some greasy openings were present, seldom more than 100-150 yards across. A few cattle were grazing in this area. Buff-breasted Flycatcher - one taken in small pine at edge of clearing - bird took short sallies for insects, call note whist repeated at short intervals. Crotalus - I nearly stepped on a coiled rattlesnake in hollow in sand beside which a pile of pine needles had been deposited by water action. It was 7:30 and the snake was cold; when prodded with a stick, it moved its head forward in rather an S-shaped position but didn't rattle tail. I took this snake with .22 gun. (#363) 6 rattles - 30" in length. Ground squirrels & chipmunks were in rocky outcrop
