KDixon 1949 Journal April 24 Sawmill, 27 mi. NE Globe, 5600 ft., Gila Co. Ariz. Birds noted on this slope; 7:00 - 10:30: Wild Turkey - heard throughout morning, ? call? Cook Ash-throated Flycatcher - one at edge of clearing Chipping Sparrow - several pairs Bewick Wren - several pairs - most common passerine Arizona Jay - flock ± 12 Hendroica nigrescens several pairs White-breasted Nuthatch - one in yellow pine Red-shafted Flicker - heard Mourning Dove are flushed Bridled Titmouse - see species acc't. Breze from E came up after 7:30 - 5-6 mi/hr now intermittent. I was struck with the low density of birds here in comparison to the ridge SW camp. Noted several chipmunks and one jackrabbit. Collected a Sceloporus from a fallen log near the base of the hill about 10:30 - individual crawled up surface of logs, did "push-ups", then "froze" as I clicked chamber of shotgun closed. Heard a Black-headed Grosbeak at noon, perhaps a new arrival from the lowlands. There seemed to be more Bluebirds than usual in the evening. Brief thunder shower in mid-afternoon. Circled up through oak-juniper where I was this morning 6:00 - 6:45 - saw Hairy Woodpecker, Band-tailed Pigeon. Bewick Wren the only active singer. Found dead Arizona Jay which apparently had wounded
