KDixon 1949 Journal 23. April 23. Sawmill 27 mi. NE Globe, 5600 ft., Gila Co., Ariz. Trotting across an open space crossing the ridge. It stopped and looked at me, raising hair of its back, finally trotting onward slowly. A second started across and the third went in the opposite direction, I made a hissing noise and this second one bounded away downslope much as a deer would. The third crossed the ridge and apparently joined the others after I went south; they had kept contact by grunts and another call I did not record at the time. I spent some time chasing a Hairy Woodpecker without success. Collected a white-breasted Nuthatch (♂, #350) calling from a yellow pine branch; the only individual seen during the morning. Took an Acorn Woodpecker and an Arizona Jay, the latter a straggler from a large flock. I noted a Junco in scrubby oaks after 10:00; a Chipping Sparrow flew into an adjacent tree and commenced singing a trill from a strut. I collected this bird for a Junco. I followed Bridled Titmouse and took one at 11:00-(see Skeris account) No song nor calls of Plain Titmouse heard. Band-tailed Pigeon - heard and seen in mixed wood land; a pair flushed from pine near camp at sunset. Wild Turkey - one called (gobble) from ridge S of camp before sunrise - others on Spear bridge before 10:00 - one calling at sunset. Anderson Warbler - several seen, ♂ + ♀ Ruby-crowned Kinglet - song heard twice
