K Dixon 1949 22. Journal April 22. Sawmill, 27 mi NE Globe, 5600 ft, Gila Co., Ariz. Bridled Titmouse - song heard twice on ridge top. One singing individual seen in mixed woodland. Steller Jay - seen in basin in pure yellow pine stands. Western Bluebird - as above. Heard Flammulated Screech Owl calling 'coop or bo-boop' from top of snag in camp. Answer from area about due south of camp. I thought I caught a shine in the top of the tree and fired - nothing further heard & no owl seen - owl from woods to south still called. April 23. Clear calm. Hunted on ridge SW camp from 7:00-11:00 Am. This morning was noticeably warmer than last, the night having been warmer. Breeze from South after 9:00, ever more than 5 mph. I was again impressed with the dryness of this country - found wet sand at head of draw leading SW from ridge top - No amphibians taken here to date. Noted gopher workings some probably this morning. Saw one Jackrabbit and 2 cottontail rabbits. Saw a clintmunk very way, I have heard them but this was first sight of one. Saw a ground squirrel in rocks (large slab, outcroppings); animal did not seem especially wild so I did not take it. About 10:00 I was walking along flat top of ridge, (oak-juniper-pine, some low underbrush) I saw 3 wild boars or peccaries. They were standing in more or less linear order, apparently hesitant of what to do at my approach (I was downwind from them). The gruntet perhaps as means of keeping contact and one started
