K Dixon 1949 Journal Apr. 20 Cusadero Spring, 23 mi. ENE Globe, 4050 ft., Gila Co., Calif. Reservation which is heavily grazed as evidenced by comparison to occasional enclosures. (Elevation at spring taken from bench marks). There is a cabin and 3 fireplaces & concrete tables there. The Celtis, sycamore, and walnut trees were beginning to leaf out, showing a lag in comparison to conditions at lower elevations. The wind was calm and temperature warm. A late flow over the camp but flight was not begun until darkness had pretty well set in. Amphibian voices were not heard and search along the brook was not successful. In a distance of perhaps 20 yards I saw 4 anuran larvae (without hind legs); in each case they sought rather slow moving water and sandy bottom. Efforts to catch same were unsuccessful. Two types of owls were present, Elf Owl and Spotted Screech Owl. Russell took 3 of the former and one of the latter. I took one Elf Owl (No 336) Apr. 21. Hunted in the area within 50 yards upstream from camp from 6:25 - 7:30 AM, P. Kella & Russell moving downstream in the taller cottonwoods. I took a singing & Bell Vireo in celtis(?) tree (# 337); no mate in evidence. I noted a ? Cardinal carrying nest material into a leafless shrub and later collected her (# 339). (Brood patch beginning to form). No male in evidence. The nest consisted of a shallow ring of twigs; it was about 3 feet above ground and was screened by a wild cucumber vine. The bird was carrying an oak leaf when taken. I walked about 75 yards upstream where junipers line the rocky canyon
