NDixon 1949 Journal Apr. 19. Enroute from Berkeley Hameda Co., to Needles, San Bernardino Co, Calif. left Berkeley at 5:30 AM accompanying F.A. Pitelka and W.C. Russell in the Chevrolet panel pick-up truck. Slightly overcast, increasing as we drove south; the day remained gray and bleak with little sun until late afternoon. We drove through Walnut Creek to Tracy and Modesto and then to Bakersfield, arriving there at 12:30. After lunch we drove east via Baistow to Needles, arriving at about 7:15 PM. Apr 20. Enroute from Needles, San Bernardino Co., Calif. to San Carlos, Gila Co., Calif. left Needles shortly after 6:00 AM, driving to Blythe and east to Phoenix by 1:00 PM. After car repairs left at 3:00 arriving at Globe about 5:00 PM. After short pause we drove to San Carlos, an Indian settlement and then climbed upward into the plateau country. We made camp about 7:00 PM at Cassadero Spring, 23 mi ENE Globe, 4050 ft, Gila Co., Ariz. The spring arises just above the point where the road crosses the stream course; several pipes lead from the spring. It is in a narrow north-south trending canyon lined with cottonwood, sycamore, walnut, and Celtis trees; occasional willow and Prosopis trees are there and I saw 2 oaks about 75 yrs. upstream from the spring. The spring gives rise to a brook which varies from 1-2 feet in width. This camp lies at the lowermost limit of the pinon-juniper-oak association. It is on the San Carlos (Apache) Indian
