KDixon 1948 Pipilo fuscus 3. Dec 28. 1 mi W Campo, 2500 ft., San Diego Co., Calif. Idenostoma as I fired at a jay. Bird silent thereafter. 50 yds to SE I flushed a bird which flew to a nearby knoll. I squeaked & it moved up into a buckwheat bush. I collected this bird, #320. I could locate no other Brown Towhees in this area but I called up one Spotted Towhee. Dec 30. Alvarado Canyon, 1 mi N, 4 mi W La Mesa, San Diegolo, Calif. Area about 1 mi E of junct'n with San Diego River. Canyon bottom flat, about 200 yards across. Several shallow ponds; scattered sycamore along the several brook courses. Vegetation of scattered arrow willow (Baccharis wiminea) and another composite of similar growth form 3-4 ft high. Scattered Phus laurina, Prunus ilicifolia and other chaparral species. Worked along base of south facing slope (Artemesia - Eriogonum - Phus laurina) but heard no towhees (5:15-5:30). Went out into flat area with arrow willow & Eriogonum when I heard Brown Towhees there. I also clock on one pair calling a distinct chip to each other. One bird flew to sumac 20 yds away, always keeping to cover. I saw its mate(?) on ground 30 ft from where first had flown - bird quick to dash for cover. I heard the first call and saw it fly up into sumac. I fired load of P2 a probable 35 yard shot & bird flew up. I didn't get shot
