K.Dixon 1948 Pipilo fuscus Dec 23. [illegible] Dulzura, +/-1300 ft., San Diego Co., Calif. Area of rather steep rolling hills with small Creek descending steadily through valley opening to southward. Live oaks and a few sycamores along stream course with scattered shrubs beneath trees. Dirt road paralleling W side of stream apparently had acted for firebreak in fire which appeared to have been 2 years ago. Hills to east covered principally with Eriogonum fasciculatum 2-3 ft high. Burned over slopes covered with Lotus scoparia & grasses and scattered Rhus laurina and Salvia apiana, both with dead branches rising above renewed foliage. Clearing weather, soil most wet. In area (accompanied by Paul Dehnell) 3:15 - 4:30 PM. Ran across one pair in oaks along stream; I missed one bird and took the other. Further down the road we ran into another pair, both birds in some upslope - apparently they were out of range for #8 & #9 shells. Once they were fired at the birds took cover and could not be flushed. Members of a pair called (apparently to each other) in a hard chip, seeming to my ear to be sharper and more metallic than the call of birds in Berkeley. In returning up the road we ran across another pair in Rhus bushes upstream from where first bird taken. Dehnell took one
