NDixon 1949 Dendrocopos pubescens Mar 13. Berkeley, Alameda Co., Calif. Noted woodpecker drumming on leafless maple tree on Bancroft Way at noon. Mar 26. Strawberry Canyon, Univ. Calif. Campus, Alameda Co., Calif. 9:00 clear calm morning. Heard woodpecker drumming in oaks N of Strawberry Pool; bird gave or whinny. About 9:15 a ♂ flew into dead willow where creek enters culvert above pool. This ♂ drummed, usually on protruding pieces of dead bark which provided better “sounding boards,” as shown → The bird also foraged. Calls given were a sharp pick and the whinny. After 3 minutes the bird gave another whinny and flew downstream in a direction leading slightly to south of the streamcourse. Apparently this post marked the eastern extent of this male's territory (written from memory Mar 27). Apr 2. 9:15 - noted ♂ actively foraging in elderberry, oak, willow near dead alder on creek opposite Poetry Fawnhome. Bird definitely ♂ gave whinny on two occasions – no evidence of ♀.
