Area south of Memorial Stadium with hedges of a low shrubby plant perhaps Ericaceous (small magenta berries) except for a small live oak and several small conifers. At 11:56 noted [illegible] hummingbird perched on branch of a pinon-like pine tree some 8-9 ft in height, the particular perch 15-18 inches below the top of this tree. This male was singing for a few seconds and then remained silent. Another male flew up from the shrubs on the bank below and took the uppermost perch in the pine. From a distance of about 20 feet the gorgets of both [illegible] were visible. Both birds remained for 2 minutes, both silent and inactive. The bird from the lower perch took flight proceeding north over the rim of the Stadium. The second flew westward toward sorority houses. Both returned in one minute, the same perches being occupied. The lower bird left and the second remained, singing for 20 seconds. The first returned to the empty tree, scanned the lower perch, and sang. The second returned after [illegible] 2 min., singing in flight but silent upon perching. Thereafter the birds left alternately on short flights with little singing taking place.
