KDixon 1948 2. hophortyx californica Oct. 3. Bear Cr., 2 mi. NNW Orinda, Contra Costa Co., Calif. Noted flock of 13 (♀♀♂) foraging in grassy field at edge of oak woods. One ♀ chased by 2 others simultaneously, the pursuit through the flock following a circular course. Chase occurred when bird walked out of trees toward flock. Overcast; misty rain; calm. Oct. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda Co., Calif. (Reported by A.H. Miller on Oct. 4): "Half-grown quail" taken in sparrow trapping operations. Bird appeared to have been hatched "early in September." Nov 21. ½ mi S, 1 mi E Lafayette, Contra Costa Co., Calif. At ± 9:30 AM (daylight saving time) noted large flock perhaps 4 dozen quail at edge of road moving into walnut orchard. Took one bird, a juv ♀ prepared as skin #306 (ovary preserved). Clear, cool day, wind strong from east. Stirton Ranch, 2½ mi. SE Lafayette, Contra Costa Co., Calif. on shaded W-W facing Baccharis - Rhamnus - plus patch 4-5 acres in extent & jumped a flock of ±50 hophortyx. Birds moved away from me on foot whenever I entered brush and flew individually from peripheral "peninsulas" of brush entering grassland. I took several shots but obtained no birds. Time 11:00 AM 'til 12:15 PM.
